How an air conditioner works

Engineer Willis Haviland Carrier developed the first air conditioner back in 1902. Borrowing from the concepts of this initial invention, modern air conditioners use advanced technologies including controls & diagnostics, sensors, vapor compression, and superior materials. No wonder air conditioning/refrigeration is considered one of the greatest engineering achievements of the 20th century.

Thanks to the development of air conditioning over the centuries, comfort has grown and new house architectural designs are now possible. It has allowed people to live and work in hot and humid environments – such as Hampden County in summer. Most households in America have central air conditioners as data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA) shows.

Put simply, the air conditioner cools the home by removing airborne heat and humidity and placing it in the outside environment. This process happens through five main components namely the evaporator, compressor, condenser, expansion valve, and refrigerants.

When you turn on the unit with the preferred temperature, its thermostat detects the difference between this set temperature and the room temperature. It immediately triggers the sucking of this warm air via the grill to the refrigerant-containing pipes. Upon absorbing heat from the warm air at the evaporator, the refrigerant turns into a hot gas.

This hot gas proceeds to the unit outside the house (compressor), where compression takes place and increases the temperature of the gas.

It goes to the condenser for condensation from a gaseous state to a liquid. The heat is dissipated into the outdoors using the metal fins. Before the refrigerant can go back to the evaporator, it passes through an expansion valve for flow control. This cycle continues until the room is at the desired temperature.
